Nobel Laureate in Literature, Mr. Wolle Shoinka visited President Juichi Yamagiwa (19 October, 2018)

Nobel Laureate in Literature, Mr. Wolle Shoinka visited President Juichi Yamagiwa on October 19, 2018. Mr. Shoinka is a Nigerian poet and dramatist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature for the first time in Africa in 1986. This time, he visited Japan to give a keynote speech at the 50th anniversary symposium of the Kyoto Seika University, which was held on the following day.

Mr. Shoinka has gained worldwide respect for his work in the field of literature and art.  He has been also actively involved in real political and social issues, making great social impacts with his insightful remarks and brave actions. Mr. Shoinka and  President Yamagiga, a primatologist studying gorillas in Africa, discussed a range of issues from their own perspectives and past experiences. One point they mutually agreed with was that culture is becoming increasingly important in the globalizing world where techno-scientific and market principles have become dominant.

Prof. Itaru Ohta,  Prof. Motoki Takahashi Professor, and Professor Emeritus, Shimada Shuhei, all from  Center for African Area Studies, also joined the meeting and took Mr. Shoinka to the center afterward for another meeting.
